Description
Lower Cretaceous Period, 100 million years BP. A large, cut and polished Speetoniceras versicolor ammonite fossil displaying the internal chamber constructions. 7.6 kg total, 27cm (10 3/4"). From a private UK collection, acquired on the London art market 1990-2000; from the Volga River, Russia. Speetoniceras is a genus of ammonites indicating those with a hard textured plate-spiral. Ammonites were cephalopod molluscs and considered as active predators or plankton eating animals. [2]
