Description
A finely carved pair of "Mipasi" wooden effigies of a Male & Female ancestors with movable arms. The Tabwa depend spiritually upon mipasi (ancestral spirits) for guidance and wisdom. Using the metaphor of light for the ability to perceive and to understand, Tabwa speak of being guided by the "light" of their ancestors: "When one experiences especially good fortune or is confronted by but escapes from some danger, it is said that 'the mipasi have brightened or brought light to that person's eyes'" (Roberts 1985: 2, 12, 41). Enlightened vision is conveyed in this figure by the wide open oval eyes, accented with tribal tattoos connotes the ability to see through obfuscations and to know more than ordinary mortals. Note the highly stylized elongated necks & faces ,the long incised long coiffure and the finely incised and raised linear designs, as well as the overall well handled surface. A Very rare find from the Tabwa peoples, DRC / CONGO, Africa. The figures measure 26 inches tall ( 27.75 inches tall on professional custom display stand)
