Description
2nd century BC-2nd century AD. A mixed group of bronze rings, including five accompanied by typed and signed notes by the late W.G. Lambert, Professor of Assyriology at the University of Birmingham, 1970-1993, which state: (U-433) 'Finger Ring of Bronze, Bezel: 25 x 25mm, Overall height: 22mm. The hoop is a band with four strands marked on it. The bezel is a thin round disc with many concentric circles over it, and on top is a central dot within circle, and wavey lines trailed around the edge like two snakes. This comes from north Iran and dates to c. 200 B.C.-200 A.D. It is in quite good condition.'; (U-410) 'Finger Ring of Bronze, Bezel: 28 x 28mm. overall height: 23mm. The hoop is a band formed of three strands. The bezel is a flat disc, plain on the underside, but decorated on the face with a dot in the centre, surrounded by many concentric circles, and a looping line trailed around the outside, with a dot over the join. This comes from north Iran and dates to c. 200 B.C.-200 A.D. It is in good condition.'; (U-411) 'Finger Ring of Bronze, Bezel: 28 x 28mm. overall height: 22mm. The hoop is a band formed of four joined strands, and the bezel is a disc plain on the underside, but the face decorated with a central big dot surrounded by concentric circles over which is trailed a looping line for some two-thirds of the outer parts. This comes from north Iran and dates to c. 200 B.C.-200 A.D. It is in good condition.'; (U-217) 'Finger Ring of Bronze, 25 x 25 x 23mm. The bezel is a round thin disc, and the hoop consists of twined wire. the design on the face of the bezel is formed from trailed metal overall in circles, with four V-shapes added on top and dots added at key points. this is a little studied type of ring, known to come from northern Iran, but which was probably made in other associated areas also. The date is most probably c. 100 B.C.-100 A.D. There is incrustation on the surface, which could be removed, and the condition is generally good.'; (U-215) 'Finger Ring of Bronze, 29 x 28 x 23mm. The bezel is a round disc covered on the face with what looks like coiled wire, over which a design is laid consisting of a dot in circle surrounded by a looping line with nine loops giving the overall impression of a rosette. The hoop consists of three strands. This is a little-studied type of ring, known to come from northern Iran, but which may have been made in other areas of west central Asia. It dates most probably to c. 100 B.C. to 100 A.D., and is of considerable interest for its technique in applying strands of metal. it has incrustation on the surface, which could be removed, and is generally in good condition.' 129 grams total, 25-30mm (1-1 1/4"). The Signo collection, the property of a West London businessman, formed in the late 1980s-early 1990s; collection numbers U-217, U-411, U-410, U-433, U-215, Z-33, Z-35, Z-28, Z-37, U-414, academically researched and catalogued by the late Professor Lambert in the early 1990s.
