Copper-engraved map, pictorial cartouche. 17.8x32 cm (7x12½").
Map showing Behring's travels from Tobolsk over Lake Baikal to Kamchatka on his first expedition, the earliest English language map to do so. It is a reduction of the 1737 map by D'Anville. A large title cartouche occupies an unknown expanse of the Arctic coastline of Siberia, and shows two Tartar figures, equipped for hunting and has a brief dictionary of terms from the Russian to English for the words - Krepost (fortress), Ostrog (little fort), Sloboda (borough) and Monastir (convent).
