NAPOLEON I: (1769-1821) French Military and Political leader, Emperor of France 1804-14, 1815. A.N.S., Napol, a bold example, in the margin of a L.S., Dejean, by Jean-Francois-Aime Dejean, one page, folio, Ministry of War, 22nd April 1807, in French. Dejean’s letter is in the form of a Report to His Majesty the Emperor and commences ‘I have the honour to bring to Your Majesty’s attention that Marshal Augereau, upon his arrival in France, demanded the payment of his salary for the duration of his recovery’, continuing ‘Since I allowed myself to pay in France the peacetime salary only, I allowed the payment of the salary allocated to his position as a Marshal of the Empire only’ and concluding ‘I implore Your Majesty to let me know if it is intended for Marshal Augereau to continue earning the General in Chief salary he was earning when commanding the 7th Corps of the Great Army, independently of his regular salary’. Napoleon’s four line holograph note in the margin instructs that Augereau’s salary as General in Chief should be paid until 1stJune. With blank integral leaf. Some very light, extremely minor staining and age wear, VGJean-Francois-Aime Dejean (1749-1824) French Politician, Engineer & General who served in the administration of the Ministry of War 1802-10.Charles-Pierre-Francois Augereau (1757-1816) French Soldier & General, Marshal of France. Napoleon entrusted Augereau with important commands and he fought with great distinction in the French Revolutionary Wars and Napoleonic Wars. In early 1807, shortly before the present report was issued, Augereau fell ill with fever and at the Battle of Eylau on 7th February 1807 he had to be supported on his horse. Nevertheless he directed the movements of his corps with his usual bravery.
