George Bush Writes to Ambassador Habib During His Middle East Campaign Averting the Israel-Syria War

Two page autograph letter signed on a black rimmed stationary card, with the seal of Vice President of the United States, 6.25" x 4.25". Dated "August 1, 1983", and signed by Vice President George Bush as "George".



Bush's letter to Habib was during the Ambassador's tenure as Ronald Reagan's special envoy to the Middle East (1981-83). In that role he averted an Israel-Syria war and an Israel-PLO was in 1981, then negotiated a peaceful end to Israel's 1982 siege of Beirut. George Bush's letter displays one of appreciation for Habib's achievements and contributions. A rare ALS offering superb content regarding the Middle East. Within the letter, Bush also makes a reference to his meeting with Lebanese President Amin Gemayel, which had occurred only a few months prior to this letter. The full letter is shown below:

Now that you are back on the links (hopefully) and out of the shuttle business, I want to simply add my voice to the unanimous chorus sung by all Habib watchers.

You did a superb job. This became even clearer to me in my talks with Gemayal - after tennis - You re-earned the respect of all of us.

I am very proud and I consider myself lucky to have you as a friend.
