Item Details
Description
741. Goa'uld Death Glider Filming Model from Stargate SG-1. (MGM-TV, 1997-2007) This is the one and only Death Glider produced exclusively for use in the long running television series. This hero glider was created and then later battle distressed for production requirements. The model was constructed in early 1998, using drawings provided by the SG1 art department. Although the vfx model from Stargate theatrical was the main influence in the design of the SG1 model, there were significant differences between the two vfx models. The model constructed for SG1 was built to match a full size cockpit set piece, and so it's cockpit proportions and canopy differed from the theatrical model. Also, the SG1 script called for the actors to enter the Death Glider from below while the ship was docked with it's wings folded. To achieve both of these requirements, the model was built with the wings in a folded position (along with a same-scale docking platform) and was also constructed with an integrated functioning cockpit elevating system. For later shots, the ship was required to appear damaged by it's escape from an exploding Goa'uld base ship in the episode "Within The Serpents Grasp". For these shots, the cockpit was permanently sealed and the wings were permanently fixed in the open position. In addition, because of budgetary constraints, the decision was made to battle damage the only existing vfx model of the Death Glider, rather than building a second shot-specific battle damaged Death Glider. Like all vfx models, the Death Glider was constructed to the budgetary requirements of Production and without an eye towards long-term display. The materials used in the construction of the model reflect Production's intent to use the model in a limited context and so less expensive and less durable construction methods were used than might be the case for other vfx models. The model was carved by hand from medium density blue foam and coated in liquid epoxy to give a smooth rigid shell to the ship. Surface details were either carved in by hand or were built up from resin castings of styrene master patterns developed for use on the Death Glider. Model is complete and in beautiful condition. Measures approx. 19 in. long x 40 in. wide x 15 in. tall. Comes with a complete history of the model documented by its creator in a LOA accompanying the model.
