Description
1237. Ed "Big Daddy" Roth 1962 original large-format artwork of "Chevy Man". Pencil, india ink, tempera, and collage on 17.5 x 22.5" art paper, mounted to acid-free 2-ply backing, signed and dated ©ROTH '62. Roth is considered by many to be the grandfather of the current low-brow art movement with his cult caricatures of hot rods and crazy custom machines of every imagination, piloted by leering, fiendish creatures whose progenitor is the notorious "Rat Fink". Original works by Roth from the 1960's, his early golden age, are virtually non-existent, especially in this large format. Also surprising here is his depiction of the Chevrolet Corvette in its upcoming "Stingray" form for 1963 (why waste ink on last year's model?). Roth's early 60's creations rising out of the Southern California hot rod, beach, surf, and skate culture caused a frenzy of model car kit and decal sales that swept the nation. His uniquely satirical take on popular culture has not lost an ounce of resonance in all these years. Fine to very fine, with a few minor stains at margins.
