William Duer (1743-1799) was a British-born American lawyer based in New York, who became the first Assistant Secretary of the U.S. Treasury under Alexander Hamilton in 1789. In 1779, Duer married Lady Catherine Alexander (1755–1826), daughter of Sarah Alexander and General William Alexander, the claimant of the Scottish earldom of Stirling.
