DESCRIPTION: Pair of American School, 18th century portraits. Oil on canvas. Includes portrait of Col. William Duer and Lady Catherine Alexander Duer. Unsigned. Labeled on reverse "Henry Stidolph Carver and Gilder, Miniature Frame Portrait, Picture, Mantle and Pier Glasses - Residence Ewen Street, Brooklyn". One with label for Phoenix Art Museum to reverse. In later 19th century gilt and gesso wood frames by framer Henry Stidolph. Col. William Duer (1743-1799) was a British-born American lawyer based in New York, who became the first Assistant Secretary of the U.S. Treasury under Alexander Hamilton in 1789. In 1779, Duer married Lady Catherine Alexander (1755–1826), daughter of Sarah Alexander and General William Alexander, the claimant of the Scottish earldom of Stirling. MEASUREMENTS: Each sight 11-3/8" x 9-1/4". Overall with frames 20" x 18". CONDITION: Relined. Craquelure. Frames with wear including losses.
