Hezekiah Butterworth was an American author who is best remembered for his enormous, seventeen volume work ‘Zig-Zag Journeys’. These volumes were written as travel guides and educational works from his travels in Europe, South America, and Canada. They were very popular throughout the United States, especially among young readers.



This volume, ‘Journeys in the Sunny South, describe Butterworth’s southern journey through the United States. It describes his ventures through Cuba, Savannah, Mississippi, and the west Indies. This volume also contains interesting stories he heard in his travels including:

‘Strange Stories’

‘Stories of William Gilmore Simms’

‘Funny Tales of the Negro Cabins’

‘Columbus’s own stories of New Spain’

And many more!



The Zig Zag series was printed in 8 different formats over the years. This 1887 edition is in the first format of binding with brown cloth, gold gilt lettering and pictures on the front cover and includes over seventy illustrations!
