Description
1889 1st ed Revolutionary War Diplomatic Correspondence of the US Law Government
The ‘revolutionary diplomatic correspondence of the United States’ is an important Revolutionary War era source of records published as a supplement to Wharton's 'Digest of the International Law of the U.S.' taken from documents issued by Presidents and Secretaries of State, etc. It Includes 'A Brief sketch of the life of Francis Wharton, by John Bassett Moore.'
Francis Wharton (1820-1889) was a Philadelphia born legal writer and educator. He graduated at Yale in 1839, was admitted to the bar in 1843, became prominent in Pennsylvania politics as a Democrat, serving as assistant attorney-general in 1845, and from 1888 until his death was employed on this edition (authorized by Congress) of the ‘Revolutionary Diplomatic Correspondence of the United States,’ which superseded Jared Sparks's compilation. The content of the letters and documents is fascinating and informative.
This first edition of Wharton's editing
“was done in a spirit of honesty, discarding the practice by which earlier compilers of American records had deleted passages reflecting on the judgement or motives of the `Founding Fathers'" (DAB).
