East Asia, China, Tang Dynasty, ca. 618 to 907 CE. A mold-formed pottery tomb attendant depicting a female dressed in long robes and standing with her hands in fists - one above the other - perhaps holding an offering in front of her. On her head is a simple headdress, and her visage displays almond eyes, a broad nose, thin lips drawn into a slight smile, and full cheeks and chin. Traces of original orange-red pigmentation are scattered across the body, and the headdress bears black pigmentation on the front. Hundreds of pottery figures like this one were carefully placed in the tombs of high-ranking people during the Tang period; one of the most interesting things about them is that they often seem to represent individuals rather than being mass-produced. Surface wear and abrasions commensurate with age, small nicks to base, body, and head, with fading to pigmentation and finer features particularly around face, otherwise intact and very good. Nice earthen deposits and traces of pigmentation throughout.
