Description
A pair of Roman terracotta counterfeiter/forger's moulds, Late Constantinian era, c. AD 340 - 360, one with an impression from the obverse of a Centenionalis of Constans (AD 337 - 350), son of Constantine I 'The Great', showing the imperial portrait, the reverse depicting a Roman soldier spearing a fallen enemy horseman with the legend 'FEL TEMP REPARATIO'. The second mold bears a reverse impression on either side, both with the legend 'FEL TEMP REPARATIO', one depicting the emperor standing in a galley piloted by Victory, the other depicting a Roman soldier spearing a fallen enemy horseman. Each is finely detailed with light earthen deposits. Diameter about 1 1/8 in (3 cm) each. Ex Princeton Economics collection, acquired by Martin Armstrong; Ex Classical Numismatic Group.
