Central Africa, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Kuba peoples (also Bakuba), ca. mid 20th century CE. A beautifully ornate wooden chalice, painted black, with a flaring foot, narrow leg, near-spherical body, and tall, conical neck with unpronounced rim. The exterior of the neck and body are crosshatched into a magnificent textured surface with interlocking diamond patterns in relief - motifs inspired by weaving. The Kuba live in the savannah region and was once a powerful kingdom. Vessels like this one were used for sharing palm wine. Size: 4.4" W x 8" H (11.2 cm x 20.3 cm)

Condition
Tiny chips and nicks from peripheries, with a short hairline crack down from the rim and a slightly larger crack rising from the foot. Excellent preservation of motifs on surface.
