12mo (6 5/8 x 4 1/8 in; 16.5 x 10.3 cm). Half-title [A3] bound as page [ix] after the Preface; washed and pressed with some very light residual toning. Fine polished aubergine calf by Sangorski & Sutcliffe, single gilt fillet border, the spine in six compartments with raised bands (two with Cordova brown morocco lettering pieces -- edges gilt. FIRST EDITION OF THE FIRST FULL ACCOUNT OF THE LEWIS AND CLARK EXPEDITION, THE WOLFGANG A. HERZ COPY. Pennsylvania-born Patrick Gass became one of the best-known members of the expedition for several reasons. As sergeant in the Corps of Discovery, his name frequently appeared in the journals of Lewis and Clark; and his narrative along with Jefferson’s Message from the President were the only accounts available for seven years before the publication of the official report.
