Located on the rim of the Grand Canyon, the Hotel El Tovar opened in 1905 and is still in operation today as a National Park Lodge. Akin's iconic image of the hotel was one of its first. It was reproduced using chromolithography for promotional distribution by the Santa Fe railroad, which was instrumental in building the Southwestern railroad network and encouraging tourism of the area.
