This lot consists of a vibrantly hand painted oil on board, rendered in the modern style of Fauvist painter Henri Matisse (French, 1869 -1954). "H. Matisse" is hand-written at lower left. The image depicts a delicate still life painting, colorful pieces of pottery are scattered on a table. The artist's use of color and expressive brush strokes come together to create a simple yet sophisticated masterpiece. Painting is executed in the modernist style for which Matisse was so well known. Unframed piece measures approximately 7" x 9.5".

En verso are several important ink stamps. One reads "WHITE STAR LINE", one reads "SALCN(?) 1961". The third stamp reads "SOTHEBY'S AUCTION GALLERY ANTIQUES".

Henri Émile Benoît Matisse (French, 31 December 1869 – 3 November 1954) was a French artist, known for both his use of colour and his fluid and original draughtsmanship. He was a draughtsman, printmaker, and sculptor, but is known primarily as a painter. Matisse is commonly regarded, along with Pablo Picasso, as one of the artists who best helped to define the revolutionary developments in the visual arts throughout the opening decades of the twentieth century, responsible for significant developments in painting and sculpture.
