Description
This lot consists of a matted, unframed watercolor on illustrator's board. Done in the delicate, fluid style associated with Franz A. Bischoff (American, 1864-1929). Image displays a conscious understanding of light and form as it falls upon two vases of languorous flora. A fine complement to any collector's gallery. Overall measures approximately 20" x 16.25". Image sight measures approximately 13.5" x 10.5".
Reverse side of board displays the name and seal of Royal Crest brand Illustrating Board, manufactured by the Hurlock Bros. Company of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Slight discoloration and a stray dab of paint lend character to the piece.
Franz Albert Bischoff (American, 1864-1929) was born in Steinschonau, Austria (current-day Czech Republic). His early artistic training honed in on the delicate arts of applied design, ceramic arts, and watercolor studies. After emigrating to the United States of America, Bischoff lived in a number of burgeoning American cities until he landed in California and embarked upon a defining chapter in his life. He was one of the earliest members of the California Art Club. Bischoff took up canvas painting and illuminated scenes of farms, fishing wharves, and coastal scenery. His delicate sense of color and form long outlived his death, in 1929, at the age of 65.
