Description
Three (3) Animal Themed English Staffordshire dishes, including one (1) Ridgway mulberry Giraffe pattern plate (6 5/8" dia.) and one (1) small oblong grey Ridgway Giraffe handled tray (8 1/4" x 6"), both marked en verso: "Published August 30, 1836 Agreeably to the Act" with crown, cartouche and banner reading "Giraffe". Note: The Giraffe pattern was made by John Ridgway (1830-1841) to commemorate the giraffes brought to the new London Zoological Gardens in 1836. Together with a small blue and white saucer decorated with center scene of boy and dog, 4 3/8" dia., the back stamped C.A. & Sons England no. 766 Rd no. 69456, late 19th century. Provenance: Private Middle Tennessee collection.
Condition
Mulberry plate: Two 1/4" rim chips and one 1" scratch to back. Fine craquelure. Oblong tray: Some minor scattered wear, especially at handles, and staining to back (especially backs of handles), a few scattered blue spots to front (possibly ink). Fine craquelure. Blue and white dish: A couple of glaze imperfections, otherwise very good.
