Four (4) hardbound volumes of The Strand and the Metropolitan magazines, including early publications of twelve (12) stories from the Adventures of Sherlock Holmes by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. 1st-3rd items: The Strand Magazine An Illustrated Monthly, Vols. I-III, edited by George Newnes, 1891-1892. Published by George Newnes Ltd., printed by the Unwin Brothers, London. Octavos, 1,992 total pages with Sherlock Holmes stories including Vol. II, July-December 1891: A Scandal in Bohemia, The Red-Headed League, A Case of Identity, The Boscombe Valley Mystery, The Five Orange Pips, and The Man with the Twisted Lip; Vol. III, January-June 1892: The Adventure of the Blue Carbuncle, The Adventure of the Speckled Band, The Adventure of the Engineer's Thumb, The Adventure of the Noble Bachelor, The Adventure of the Beryl Coronet, and The Adventure of the Copper Beeches, with illustrations and indexes, published hardbound in three-quarter brown leather with marbled-paper sides, gilt lettering to spines with five raised hubs. 9 5/8" H x 6 7/8" W x 1 5/8" D. Note: The Strand Magazine was a monthly magazine founded by George Newnes, composed of short fiction and general interest articles. 4th item: The Metropolitan Magazine, Vol. XXI, January to April, 1838. Published by Saunders and Otley, printed by Ibotson and Palmer, London. Octavo, 130 pages with illustrations and index, hardbound in three-quarter brown leather with marbled-paper sides, gilt lettering to spines with five raised hubs. 8 7/8" H x 6" W x 1 1/2" D. Provenance: the collection of Frank Ingraham, Tap Root Farm, Franklin, Tennessee.
Condition
Overall good condition with wear, foxing spots, toning, areas of dampstaining/acid burn, pencil inscriptions, etc. to be expected from age and manner of use. Covers with separation from spines in some places.
