James Neil Boyle (American/California, 1931-2006) oil on canvas illustration art painting depicting people boarding a steamboat ferry with painted name "Fred C. Dobbs" on a sign near the pilot house. Signed Boyle AICA BSWCA lower right. Giltwood molded frame with carved anthemion corner ornaments and linen liner. 29 1/2" H x 23 1/2" W sight, 37" H x 31" W framed. (Note: Fred C. Dobbs was the name of Humphrey Bogart's character in the movie "Treasure of the Sierra Madre"). Biography: James Neil Boyle received his formal art education from the Banff School of Fine Art and at the Chouinard Art Institute and the Art Center College of Design. He had a twenty-year career in commercial illustration including for the Saturday Evening Post, Reader's Digest, Good Housekeeping, the Rand Corporation, Walt Disney Productions, the U.S. Air Force and the U.S. Post Office. He was president of the Society of Illustrators of Los Angeles and a recipient of their lifetime achievement award. Over thirty of his paintings are in the U.S. Air Force Historical Art Collection in the Smithsonian Institute and the Pentagon. (source: Askart)
