At the age of fifteen he went to work as a bank clerk, a position he held for over a decade. During that time, he also is known to have taken classes at Gray’s School of Art. He taught himself printmaking, and he built his own etching press to print his early plates. He wanted to pursue his art career and left the bank traveling first to Holland in 1910 where he studied Rembrandt’s work. He developed a life long interest in antique paper on which many of his prints are printed.
