Alexander III of Russia Czar

Alexander III DS & Commemorative Stamp Block, Handsomely Displayed!

A 1p document in Russian signed by Tsar Alexander III (1845-1894) at lower center, displayed to the left of a 100-count 3 kopek stamp block commemorating Alexander III, handsomely matted and framed behind glass. The document is untranslated, but dates from 1893, the year preceding Alexander III's premature death from nephritis at age 49. Both documents are displayed in a floating mount within an Asian style carved rosewood finished frame. Not examined out of frame. Overall size of frame: 24.5" x 17.875" x .625".

The partly printed and partly handwritten document features an enormous imperial signature, measuring 6.25" x 2.375" alone. Though untranslated, we can reasonably venture that the document is probably a commission or award. Portions of the text are lightly underlined in pencil. Isolated minor loss to the upper left and lower right corners. 9.25" x 14".

The stamp block, comprised of 100-count 3 kopek stamps, depict a full frontal portrait of Alexander III in military uniform. This series was probably printed sometime during the 1910s. The stamps are in pristine condition, though the outer margins of the stamp block are lightly toned, and there is an isolated closed tear at right. 10.625" x 2.375".

Alexander III was known as the "Peacemaker" because the Russian Empire was not involved in any international conflicts during the tsar's 13-year-long reign. Unlike his father Alexander II, who implemented many progressive reforms like liberating the serfs, Alexander III was more reactionary. His successor, eldest son Nicolas II, would attempt to emulate his father's autocratic style of leadership.
