‘The Volunteer Soldier of America’ is a late 19th-century account on the militia soldiers who have fought in American battles, military education for soldiers, and reviews of military systems. Eicher makes an excellent effort in describing this work.

“This is a peculiar blend of materials, mostly trivial but some highly valuable. Logan’s hypothesis suggests that volunteers make excellent soldiers and that, like him, those who are not regular army officers can make superb contributions to American military organizations. The most useful portion of the study is a lengthy appendix titled ‘Military Reminiscences of the War in the West…. Good, short sketches of [Logan’s

Involvement at Belmont and Forts henry and Donelson, the movement on Corinth, the Vicksburg campaign, and the Atlanta campaign supply much detail of interest on the disposition of troops and his relations and communications with other commanders.

This memorial edition includes a dedication page with ‘To the Immortal Host of Citizen Soldiers and Sailors’.
