Description
Kemble, Edward W. Kemble’s Pickaninnies: A Collection of Southern Sketches. New York/London: R.H. Russell and John Lane, 1901. First edition. Publisher’s cloth-backed pictorial boards, mounted circular illustration to front cover. Oblong 4to. Pict. half-title with frontis. to verso, followed by 30 full page stereotypical illustrations of black children and adolescents in black-and-white, printed captions in dialect, on rectos only. Slightly shaken, clean internally but for minor smudging to edges of a few leaves. Overall a nice copy of a rarely seen title. Kemble is best known for his illustrations for the first edition of Twain’s Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, as well as other works by Twain and such classics as Harriet Beecher Stowe’s Uncle Tom’s Cabin.
