Biography from Claude Aguttes
Born in Inazawa, Japan in 1901, Takanori Oguiss studied at the Tokyo School of Fine Arts before moving to Paris at age 26, where as a pupil of the painter Foujita, he became an important part of the Parisian avant-garde. He settled in one of the studios of the Cité Montmartre-aux-artistes, not far from his comrade Inokuma. He also socialized with the painters of La Ruche, a group of young artists from all over Europe at the center of artistic life in Paris at the time. His sojourn in Paris also gave Oguiss the opportunity to immerse himself in the work of Maurice Utrillo, whom he liked in particular and from whom he followed, by using bright colors and straight lines in his urban views. Although he returned to his native country for a few years, where he participated in several exhibitions, Takanori Oguiss permanently settled in France in 1948, and became renowned for his views of Paris, as he was particularly fond of its old neighborhoods. He made many paintings with unusual framing and bright colors, which depicted antique shops, stationery stores, flower merchants, and rather unusual still lifes.
