Description
Oil and casein on masonite, signed lower right. A depiction of a woman in floral dress, with characteristic repeating floral pattern, and drifting and lyrical floral pattern surrounding her, seated at a bench with large column beside her. Housed in the original frame, evidenced by drips of color splashing the liner, and likely dating to the 1960s. Discovered in a Cincinnati collection, where Faulkner frequently exhibited during the 60s and 70s (most notably at Closson's Galleries, where the artist had a number of solo shows).
Henry Faulkner was a poet, artist, and social phenomenon who made his home in Lexington, Kentucky during most of his career. He wintered in Key West, and was associated with the likes of Ezra Pound, Ernest Hemmingway, and Tennessee Williams, the latter of which he was known to have had a romantic relationship. He was heavily influenced by Marc Chagall, and the subjects of his work tend to be musical and poetic. A major recent publication, The Gift of Color, has reinvigorated interest in his work, along with several major retrospectives and exhibitions. He was known for many things, among them his last minute shows, hanging works on ceilings, his kind nature, and his pet goat Alice, whom he was known to take with him everywhere.
19.5" x 10" (sight)
24" x 14" (framed)
Condition
Minor scuffing to frame (expected, as the artist salvaged antique frames for his work), and surface dirt. Otherwise in untouched condition.
