Oil on Board by Pierre Villain (French, 1880-1950) Washerwoman. Unfinished on left side. A member of the Society of French Artists (Societe des Artistes Francais) medal of honor, 1947. Strongly rooted in European Social Realism, Villain's work shows influence by Robert Henri and George Bellows, and bears a resemblance to work by his contemporaries, Moses and Raphael Soyer Board 16"x13". In wood frame 16 3/4"x20x2". Weight 3 pds 10 oz. PROVENANCE: A Charleston SC Private Estate.
