Karl Schrag (from artist supplied vita, circa 1970)FROM ARTIST SUPPLIED VITAE:
1912 in Karlsruhe, Germany. His father was German and his mother American. Graduated from Humanistisches Gymnasium in 1930, and immediately began to study art, first in Geneva (his family moved to Zurich in 1931) and then in Paris at the Ecole des Beaux Arts, at the Atelier of Lucien Simon with Roger Bissiere at the Academie Ranson, and at Lan Grande Chaumiere.
In 1938 he came to the U.S., studied at the Art Students League with Sternberg, and at Atelier 17 with Stanley William Hayter. He was director of Atelier 17 in 1950, taught graphic arts at Brooklyn College in 1953-1954, since 1954 at Cooper Union.
Schrag is an American citizen and lives and works in New York and in Maine.
