Description
The 2nd Zionist Congress 1898: original document in French entitled 'At the Zionist Congress of the year 1898 in Basel - Annex with Connection to the Financial Debates of 28 August" (Au Congres Sioniste de l'annee 1898 a Bale Annexe en Rapport avec les Debats Financiers du 28 Aout), by M. Korwin Piotrowska (a feminine Slavic surname). The document is an emotional exortation of support, in French, for the Congress's growing movement towards the establishment of a Jewish homeland, and the author may be Maria Gabriela Stefania Korwin-Piotrowska (1857–1921), known as Gabriela Zapolska - a non-Jewish Polish novelist, playwright, naturalist writer, feuilletonist, theatre critic and stage actress, who wrote plays, novels, short stories, works of journalism and over 1,500 letters; a social-satirist, feminist and naturalist heavily influence by Emile Zola, who portrayed the lives of the poorest and most vulnerable people including proletarians, Jews, servants, prostitutes. This would be a presently unknown aspect of Zapolska's biography.
