Oliver O. Howard Carte de Visite Signed "O.O. Howard Maj. Gen." 2.5" x 4", with an M.B. Brady & Co. imprint, along with a blue George Washington two-cent tax stamp on the verso. A vignette bust of Oliver Otis Howard, signed at bottom. The card is captioned as being "Entered according to Act of Congress by M.B. Brady & Co. in the year 1865 in the Clerk's Office of the District Court of the District of Columbia." Howard (1830-1909), known as "The Christian General" for his piety, saw action at First Bull Run, Fair Oaks (for which he was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor), Antietam, Gettysburg, Chancellorsville, and Sherman's March to the Sea and the Carolinas. He commanded the Army of Tennessee and after the war helped found Howard University in Washington, D.C. From the Bret J. Formichi American Civil War Rarities Collection. Condition: Minor soiling at the upper right corner, else very good.
