Description
Naive Waist Length Portraits of Anshel Levi (born 1760) and his wife Babette, in their latter years, both signed "Ziegler", he with head covered, holding a Frankfurter newspaper, she in cap and collar, holding a kerchief in her right hand, (which displays a gold ring on each of her four fingers). Oil on canvas, unframed, 21 3/4" x 17 1/2". Overall craquelure to her portrait only.
A label verso from the Warwick Gallery, 2022 Walnut Street, Philadelphia, identifies the pair, indicates they were the parents of Babette Levi, who married Benjamin Loeb in 1805, Nierstein, Germany, who were the parents of August B. Loeb in 1841, Bechtheim Worms, Germany.
