Description
Vance Kirkland (American, 1904-1981)
A Misty Landscape, 1943, watercolor on paper, signed Vance Kirkland and dated (lower right)
29 x 22 inches
Provenance:
Lewis Sharp, former Director, Denver Art Museum, and former Curator and Administrator of the American Wing, Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, stated in a television documentary:
"...looking at Vance Kirkland's watercolor... he handled this medium as well as any American artist ever has. You simply can go back, and whether you want to begin with John Singer Sargent, Winslow Homer, Thomas Eakins, or move into the 20th century with John Marin or Charles Burchfield, Vance Kirkland was a master... which clearly ranks him with those masters of this medium."
Many people remark that Kirkland's watercolors don't really look like watercolor, they are so bold with their strong color saturation and personal techniques that Kirkland developed. This is a fine example where he vividly portrays a towering scene of rocks and mountains in Colorado.
- Hugh Grant, Executor of Vance Kirkland Estate; Founding Director and Curator, Kirkland Museum of Fine & Decorative Art, Denver, Colorado.
