Description
Group of three North American pre-Columbian ceramic bowls. One Caddoan pottery bowl, Texas, ca. 1400-1650. One Mississippian bowl, clam shell tempered, Oklahoma, ca. 1200-1600. One shell-tempered Taos or Picuris Pueblo Kiva or Cloud bowl, ca. 1664-1706, possibly Scott County Pueblo/El Cuartelejo, since that is the only location where the Mississippian tradition of shell tempering is found in Pueblo pottery. The Four Terraced Motifs seen on this bowl represent rain clouds from the four cardinal directions. The ceremony may have included the use of cornmeal, sacred water, or boiled medicine. See: "First People Pots," Medicine bowl, Object ID: 2005-17. Dimensions: Height ranges from 3 in to 4 in; diameter ranges from 5 in to 9 in.
