Description
Southern Central African Republic (Basse-Kotto or Mbomou Prefectures) and Northwestern Democratic Republic of Congo (Nord-Ubangi Province): Ngbandi or Ngbandi-Yakoma people shield, circa early 20th century. Partially-dyed oval wickerwork with geometrical pattern and wood frame; wooden handle. Shield is laterally curved inward. Original gripboard with plaiting at top of bottom. Gripboard reattached to the shield with string. Another shield with identical pattern is in the collection of the Weltmuseum Vienna (acc. no. 1176542), collected in 1920 by Franz Thonner.
