Description
Bronze of man holding flower by Jewish refugee(family relocated in England during the first World War) Austrian sculptor Joseph Heu.Signed J.Heu on the base in the bronze.//////////////////////////////(From AskArt.com as told by Richard Bentley):"Joseph Heu, sculptor, to my knowledge not only worked but emanated from Austria, it is my understanding that the family lived in Vienna. The Heu family (post Josephs death) were close family friends throughout my childhood. The history as explained to me by his son John (also an artist) was that: The family fled to England during the second wold war as Jewish refugees. Joseph a well known sculptor had works erected in parks in Vienna. Unemployed and homeless, they were taken in by Ampleforth College (Abbey) a catholic education establishment in Yorkshire, Joseph then worked on secular art during the war. The family finally moved to York, residing at 45 East Mount Road for many decades (throughout my childhood). John as mentioned also an artist, was a teacher and assisted at the York Theater Royal. The family home was a resting place for working actors and I have fond memories passing time with many notable thespians and other interesting visitors from across Europe, I even met a Countess. Peter Heu, a second son had returned to Vienna after the war to take up teaching, I have only distant memories of a strapping man with quite a bubbly personality appearing now and then. Josephs wife, his former model was many years his junior. She never did fully grasp the English language, but maintained her Austrian identity throughout introducing me as a very young person to amazing culinary and cultural delights. John having re-married has to my knowledge returned to Vienna, the city of his childhood. He is still the artist and my last meeting revealed a man with an insatiable family spark for life. I recall that during my childhood I was drawn to a large family chest in the studio where simply hundreds (if not thousands) of Josephs pen and ink drawings resided. I was informed that his to flee Germany was scant reward for a man who had spent years in the trenches of World War 1 as a German war artist. I suspect the images were suppressed by the family during the second world war given their historical background. It was, and is, a shame those rapid, detailed and emotive sketches together with Josephs other works are not available for everyone to see. I for one have fond memories of those and countless other images generated by this prolific artistic family."
