Antonio Rodriguez de Trujillo González (Spanish 1925-1989) Fissures, oil or acrylic and sand on canvas, known as a "Matter Painting", signed lower right, framed. 50 x 18 in. canvas size Condition: Very good.Antonio Rodríguez de Trujillo González was born in Seville, in the old Queipo de Llano street, currently Constitución, on November 23, 1925. He studied High School at the Colegio Francisco de Paula, the same school of the Cordoba painter Santiago del Campo. Later studied Fine Art at the University of Seville. He practiced an informal painting style called “matter painting” in his search for his intuitive approach, which brings him closer to the tenets of artists like Millares, Burri and Fautrier. He was awarded the Landscape of La Rabida scholarship in Huelva in 1948, the landscape grant of the Rodríguez Acosta Foundation of Granada. In 1949 he joined "Grupo 49" later known as the Young Seville School, an artist collective of graduates from the Superior School of Fine Arts of St. Elizabeth, Hungary. The artist exhibited throughout the 1950's in various venues and shows. In 1956 Antonio moved to New York City and studied at the Art Students League of New York through 1959, where he won the first annual prize in 1958. In 1956 he was awarded scholarships through the Karman and Snackember Foundations. In the early 1960s, he became a member of the Art Students League of New York and the Painters and Sculptors Society of New Jersey. He participated in the Biennial of the Museum of Art Carnegie Institute with the Spanish abstract painters. He exhibited at the Washington Gallery of Modern Art, Georgetown (1961), at the New York International Gallery (1962), at the Jason Gallery, New York (1963-65), at the Jersey City Museum , where he won the Bocour Award (1964), at the Brooklyn Museum (1964) and at the Irving Gallery, Milwaukee (1965). Antonio opened The Trujillo Studios of Fine Arts, assisting young artists, exhibiting their work along with his own while exhibiting at Phoenix Gallery and Saluster Gallery, New York. After returning to Seville in 1974, he exhibiting in; Twelve Sevillian painters of the Sala Zurbarán del Ateneo, Melchor Gallery, Small Format; Fourteen Sevillian painters working in Seville at the Cultural Center of the Villa de Madrid; (1980) Magdalena Mesa Art Gallery; participated in 40 years of painting in Seville, organized by the Provincial Council, Sala de la Savings bank of San Fernando de Sevilla and the Exhibition homage of Sevillian artists to Picasso 1881-1981, held in the Museum of Contemporary Art of Seville. In 1981, he taught at the Pilot Baccalaureate Institute of Tafira, in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. There he exhibited in 1984, organized by the Insular Fund of Gran Canarias, and later exhibited at the Casa de Colón.
