Item Details
Description
Oil on canvas 36 x 24 in., 44 x 32 in. (framed). Born in Budapest in 1936 to an artistic family, his father was an artist, his mother a noted writer and his grandfather a renowned sculptor whose works still stand in Budapest's public squares and sites. Beginning with lessons in classical piano and art at a young age, Bodo went on to study at the Budapest Academy. There, under the instruction of such professors as Barcasy, Szony and Szlai he lay a solid academic foundation in art. During this period in Bodo's life, his father was engaged in museum restoration work, thus the young artist had easy access to study the very finest of old master works. Bodo's education was completed through private tutoring sessions with Hungary's foremost artist, Istvan Csok.In hopes of escaping Hungary's ever widening web of communism, Bodo made three attempts to leave his homeland before actually succeeding. Along with 2,000 other refugees, the young artist boarded a U.S. naval transport headed for New York and nearly lost his life when he was swept overboard during a tumultuous storm in the North Sea. The incident brought Bodo instant notoriety as the "saved artist" and he was overwhelmed with orders for paintings for the remainder of the voyage. Thus, he landed at New York with more money in his pocket than ever before. Bela Bodo's dream like paintings depict blooming meadows, colorful European gardens, beautiful young ladies lounging in lace trimmed dresses, and quaint scenes of California's coastline: Cambria, Carmel, Pebble Beach, and Hearst Castle. Bodo combines the classical techniques of impressionism, the grace of romanticism and the spontaneity of the fauvists and divisionists. Source:www.bodoartstudio.com
