Description
AMERICAN SILK-EMBROIDERED MEMORIAL, depicting a woman in a dress with drawn head and hands, draping a flower garland onto a memorial dedicated to "Werter", likely for the character from the short novel, "The Sorrows of Young Werter" (1787), by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, set in a colorful landscape featuring two willows, various foliage, and a house with a red roof in the background, faded "Mary / [Heyliger?]" signature bordering the lower edge. Housed under glass in an old gilt frame. Reserve. Possibly Folwell School, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Circa 1804. 21 1/2" x 16 1/4" sight, 24 1/2" x 19 1/4" OA.
Fair overall condition with conservation work, staining, tears, and holes to backing fabric, some fading and toning to thread, frame with wear and flaking to finish. Not examined out of frame.
