Gustave Bourgain (1856-1919) "Caucasian rider", oil on canvas, late 19th century
Gustave Bourgain (1856 Paris - 1919 Paris) was a well-known French military and genre artist, pupil of Jean Leon Jerome and Edouard Detaille. In 1882 he worked as a war reporter for Parisian magazine "L'illustration" at the front of Anglo-Egyptian War. Two years later, at the Salon of 1884, he showed his painting "Arrestation de pillards a Alexandrie, juillet 1882", which was conceived and influenced by the events at the front.
Later Bourgain received the title of "peintre officiel du ministére de la Marine". In 1914/15 he worked for Musee de l'Armee in Paris. Apart from genre and military subjects he painted scenes from the lives of fishers and the French Navy; from 1894 he produced a great number of paintings with subjects from the French Revolution and scenes with Napoleon Bonaparte. He was also a 1st-class watercolor artist and book illustrator. From 1890 he participated regularly in the Salon exhibitions. He also took part in the Parisian World Exhibition of 1889 and was awarded a medal.
