Description
Second half 19th century, 64 x 72 cm, North West Persia, Kurdistan
This knotted bag face may have been woven by a Shahsavan tribal group in the Bijar area. Indications in favour of this assumption are the border design, the palette and the light red, coarsely woven kilim back which has partially survived. The field design – offset horizontal rows of syrga motifs (abstract birds) on a dark blue ground – is considered a reliable identifying feature of Shahsavan weavings. – Slight damage and signs of wear at the sides and corners, otherwise in good condition. Mounted onto a black fabric.
