Description

A LARGE JAPANESE TURQUOISE GROUND CLOISONNE LIDDED CENSER, MEIJI PERIOD (1868-1912), with a shaped oval domed lid centering a recumbent horse finial wearing a yin/yang topped saddle, on an oval yellow ground panel with pale pink lotus blooms flanked by red stylized fretwork, above a turquoise ground rounded tier enclosing pale pink blooms within various shades of green curling foliage, over a reticulated patinated copper tier of scrolling leafy vines and lotus on a third tier continuing green enameled leafy foliage surrounding pink shaded lotus flowers flanked by lapis blue tinted winged phoenix alternating dark red phoenix, on a conforming lotus and fretwork decorated flat rim within stylized fretwork banding, above a tapering basin with similarly detailed sides of lapis blue and red ground phoenix centering ochre lotus flowers within polychrome enameled blossoming leafy foliage, flanked by downturned duck form handles and raised on beastly mask headed legs ending in scrolling feet, enclosing a conforming yellow ground panel with a polychrome stylized ruyi petaled flower, opposite a turquoise blue enameled interior.
