Nixon and Haig, Signed White House Letters

A pair of two single page typed letters signed, both on White House Stationary. The Richard Nixon letter was written during the storm of the Watergate scandal, and is signed by Nixon as "RN", and dated "August 16, 1973". Alexander Haig's letter is dated "January 7, 1971", and signed as "Alex". Both letters were written to Mr. Earl Mazo thanking him for his various gifts. Near fine with small red smudge on Nixon's letter.

Earl Mazo was an American journalist, author, and government official serving for one year during the presidency of Harry Truman as a deputy assistant secretary of defense. In 1959, Mazo authored a biography of Richard Nixon, "Richard Nixon: A Political and Personal Portrait". The following year, he published a series of exposés on serious voter fraud in the United States which, he believed, cost Nixon the 1960 U.S. Presidential election. His reports prompted a successful appeal by Nixon to Mazo's editors to terminate the series of stories on the grounds that the U.S. could not afford a constitutional crisis at the height of the Cold War.

General Alexander Haig was a four-star Army general and Nixon's White House Chief of Staff. Haig was a longtime holdout in the futile attempt to save Nixon's Presidency, but the damning evidence that was revealed almost daily in the final weeks of Nixon's administration left Haig no choice but to attempt to orchestrate a somewhat dignified exit for Nixon and smooth transition for Ford. For weeks, leading up to Nixon's resignation, the day to day operations of the White House and, really, the Presidency itself were handled by Haig.
