21 1/2 x 30" (54.6 x 76.2 cm).

Many works by Thomas Chambers are inspired by the sketches of W. H. Bartlett. These were published as engravings in “American Scenery; or Land, Lake, and River: Illustrations of Transatlantic Nature” by George Virtue in London 1840. This painting was thought to be an imaginary landscape until the falls in the background were identified as Bridal Veil Falls in Yosemite National Park. The falls were not discovered by white men until 1852. Soon after their discovery James H. Hutchings engaged Thomas Almond Ayres to engrave a number of images of the falls for Hutchings California Magazine. This painting is reminiscent of those engravings.
