Antique 1880's cast iron door knocker shaped as lady's hand, representing the Hand of Fatima ,Prophet Muhammad's daughter, an ancient Islamic symbol believed to protect against evil. Hence, the occupants of a house were protected against all evil although they were not necessarily of Muslim faith. Door knocker like this were common mostly in Southern Spain, where the Moorish Islamic Arabic influence in architecture and culture remained, but could be find all the way to Southern France as well.The hand is holding a ball with the number "5" incised underneath. The number 5 (as well as the 5 fingers of the hand) represent the 5 pillars of IslamCirca mid/late 19th century, Victorian taste. Measurements: Approx. 5.5" long the hand, 8" overall with the screw, 2.5" wideWeighs about 2 lbs. 3 oz.
