Description
A rare and spectacular old ceremonial ladle, known as wunkirmian or wakemia (which translates as "spoon associated with feasts") From The Dan peoples, Gio/Geh ethnic group in the Northeast of Liberia (Nimba County) to the Ivory Coast border. West Africa. This spoon is quite unique and deviates from the norm quite a bit, and that is what makes it so very interesting. Most likely it was commissioned and owned by a member of the tribe of high status. The Spoon was also most likely used like a feast dish, to offer, or eat from at ceremonies, unlike the traditional style of Wunkirmian, this was not used as a ladle, even though the form is there. The patina and classic style all suggest actual field use and ceremonial use.The ladle measures 24 inches long x 8 inches wide.
