Description

In 1784, John Walter purchased the patent for logography, a new type of printing process. It was a new form of typesetting that was said to be faster and more accurate than conventional typesetting because it allowed more than one letter – sometimes whole words and short phrases – to be set at a time. By May 1784 Walter was in business, printing some 40 titles by this process, including this edition of Daniel Defoe’s Robinson Crusoe (1785). Logography was not a success. The exercise did, however, lead him to establish The Daily Universal Register, which was re-launched on 1 January 1788 as The Times, which we know today as The London Times. This Logographic Press Robinson Crusoe is not only a scarce edition of the work, it is also a fine example of an innovative printing process, printed by the original owner of the London Times. Covers detached but text blocks complete, intact and very presentable. 5 x 8 - 485 pp./452 pp.
