This lot consists of a mixed media illustration on paper, done in the abstract expressionist style of Ad Reinhardt (American, 1913-1967). A handwritten inscription at lower right reads, "Reinhardt '38". Framed piece measures approximately 15" x 19", with an approximate image sight of 10" x 13.25".

This stimulating composition is a balanced medley of cool tones. Quilted planes of jade green, sapphire blue, and midnight black create a soft swirl of movement. This piece is sure to be a striking addition to any collection.

Ad Reinhardt (American, 1913-1967) was an abstract painter active from the 1930s through the 1960s. He was born in Buffalo, New York and raised along the Niagara River. He received extensive artistic training, at Columbia University, the American Artists School, the National Academy of Design, and New York University. In addition to his studies, Reinhardt was an active educator; he held positions at multiple American universities, including Yale. Reinhardt's early career was an extended process of "emptying out" the elements of his art which he found to be exorbitant. This led to stark and uniform pieces that became increasingly austere and full of geometry. Ad Reinhardt is perhaps most renowned for his "black" or "ultimate" paintings, which he professed to be the "last paintings" that anyone can paint.
