Item Details
Description
This lot consists of a mixed media illustration on paper, executed in the pop art style of modern artist Roy Lichtenstein (American, 1923-1997). "For Nancy / Roy Lichtenstein" is hand written in the bottom right margin of this piece. Overall framed measurements approximately 17" x 20", with an approximate image sight of 11.25" x 14".

Image depicts a polished-looking gentleman in a suit and tie gently upturning the face of his weeping female companion, a beautiful blonde who gazes at him through her tears. The viewer is led to wonder what has transpired or is about to transpire between these two subjects. Rendered in the comic book style for which Lichtenstein is so well known. This iconic drawing would be a highlight to any modern art collector's gallery.

Stamp at lower left corner of piece reads, "Leo Castelli. New York." Reverse side of piece features an affixed paper label which reads, "Dennis A. Maycher. 2 Mt. Pleasant Avenue. Wallington, New Jersey 07057. (201) 438-7770."

Roy Fox Lichtenstein (October 27, 1923 - September 29, 1997) was an American pop artist. During the 1960s, along with Andy Warhol, Jasper Johns, and James Rosenquist among others, he became a leading figure in the new art movement. His work defined the premise of pop art through parody. Inspired by the comic strip, Lichtenstein produced precise compositions that documented while they parodied, often in a tongue-in-cheek manner. His work was influenced by popular advertising and the comic book style. He described pop art as "not 'American' painting but actually industrial painting". His paintings were exhibited at the Leo Castelli Gallery in New York City.

Whaam! and Drowning Girl are generally regarded as Lichtenstein's most famous works, with Oh, Jeff...I Love You, Too...But... arguably third. Drowning Girl, Whaam! and Look Mickey are regarded as his most influential works. His most expensive piece is Masterpiece, which was sold for $165 million in January 2017.
