Item Details
Description
This lot consists of an oil painting on canvas board, done in the style of Gilbert von Canal (Austrian, 1849-1927). A handwritten inscription at lower right reads, "Canal". This unframed piece measures approximately 11.25" x 9".

Image depicts a humble young farm-woman standing in the middle of a field. Low mountains skirt the flatlands. She holds a small basket at her hip and a somber expression on her face. Bright, morning light plays across the young woman's cap, her gently sloping shoulders, and the folds of her long skirt. A fresh and clear image; modest, yet elegant. This piece would make a handsome addition to any collection.

Further accompanied by several paper labels which are affixed to the reverse side. The two uppermost labels feature the handwritten pen-and-ink inscriptions, "Gilbert v. Canal. 'Hollanderin' [sp?]" and "No. 17". A number of graphite inscriptions directly onto the board appear to be initials and/or metric measurements of the piece. The third label is by far the most detailed, and appears to be written in French. The following is a rough translation:

"GILBERT OF CANAL.

Born at Laibach on 24 Dec 1849, landscape painter.

He worked at the Vienna Academy and then at Dusseldorf. He traveled to Holland, Westphalia, England, and Sweden. He then settled in Munich.

Gilbert von Canal (Austrian, 1849-1927), sometimes referred to as "Gilbert of Canal", was a prominent member of the Dusseldorf school of landscape and watercolor painters. He received formal artistic training in Vienna, Austria, during the mid-1870s. From then on, Canal made a career of traveling and portraying idyllic scenes of European farmland. Canal's rambling eye fixated upon a range of scenes, from historic cities, villages, and castles, to windmills, rivers, and coastal landscapes. He was deeply influenced by the Golden Age of Dutch painting, favoring pale light and romantic country settings. Today, Gilbert von Canal remains a much celebrated and quite definitive member of his artistic generation.
